Artist: The Pop Group

Album: Y

Release Date: 1979

Label: WP

Abrasive, but interesting, the Pop Group's debut is perhaps the most succinct summation of their angry and defiant approach to rock & roll. Although at times resembling the discordant funk of fellow post-punk radicals Gang of Four, the Pop Group leave rhythm behind almost as quickly as they find it, and the result is a clattering din of sound resembling an aural collage. The longish, guitar-driven track "We Are Time" is the strongest cut, establishing a solid groove that won't let go.

To Red PandaDon't listen to that kind of foolishness. I would like to know why you classify certain things as "No Wave" ?I am being most sincere. Please help me understand how The Pop Group could even be seen as such. Help me understand why such a term is still in use. Having been quite familiar with "those" bands all I know is that the one thing they had in common was really nothing other than originality, audacity, and much more importantly A TIME AND A PLACE. it seems Geography and Chronology are sufficient modifiers as long as the principals are spoken for , in detail or am I wrong.

To Flashman453Im sorry. Fecund, Feculent, I admit my mistake. You sir prove with your reply that you are far stupider than me. Hey don't be a chickenshit, allow for your post to be replied to. To quote colt62793: " you think you're above it all ,but you're not" tee Hee Hee!! Plus after looking over your particulars you have shit taste in music. Hell, I didn't even know Glass Candy was still around (evidently their not??). Damn, Im sorry friend. You have a kind of cafeteria taste in music. I like some of it: LRD and This Heat , get some!! The Ferrari and Messiaen "looks good", ya know street cred. But ... " Ooooh Eno ( ambient of course) and Penderecki right next some uhhh Rap music! yeah that's were it's @. make em cream jeans yo!!" (I like Keith Thornton though). What about some Archie Bell and The Drells hell JB & the Flames. Or Ayler, Taylor, Sharrock, Skip James, John Hurt. Fuck even Satie, Webern Feldman, Xenakis, Young, Conrad. Be a man...Too much stuff for the hip folks and sexy ladies mmmmmm!XOXOTed

To colt62793,You sound like a jilted lover... Help me understand what I think I'm "above". Don't be petty because I pay mind to the nuances of what I find interesting. The more attention to detail something begs the better it is to me (most of the time). When that happens then I feel they have gone way beyond or as you said "above" labels, genres, and that kind of swill. It's only rock'n roll...

To VarnaVix , I apologize I meant to say feculent. Something like The Pop Group defies labels. It's not like "Classical" is to Mozart... I think shows very little appreciation for what they did if the term "No Wave" enters your head. If I understand it right Nowave is anti-New Wave (the Contortions,DNA,etc) and I think it's obvious this is above all of that in the same way This Heat isn't "Postpunk" (that would be a chronological misnomer). "Micro-Genres" hurt aesthetics. They speed up the rate of decay for any given object or offering for or to the senses and or intellect. I feel something like this should be given space, to be taken in on its own. To me it's pretty simple. "Post Rock" maybe... But I believe someone made a seemingly uneducated and negative comment in regard to this song (band): "Nowave-Emperor's New clothes"?? Sorry for taking up for something I think is really good. My statement primarily dealt with that part of the comment. It seemed as if they're in their 20's and read a Trouser Press for the first time or something...

Ted Byron, what exactly is vulgar about your post? HA HA HA! The fact that you would even apply that term to this post shows not only that the space in your foramen magnum is quite fecal but whatever room is left in there contains a very small and frightened medulla oblongata.

Why is it so offensive to use the term "No Wave"? Many artists dislike labels, but ultimately they do serve a purpose in describing stylistic movements and linking groups that share common themes and history. It certainly seems no worse than referring to Mozart or Beethoven as "Classical." Also, I think you may not have the correct definition of the word fecund, it makes your sentence rather confusing.

When you say "emperor's new clothes", are you implying that fans are only pretending to like this? Because that is certainly not the case, at least for the no-wave listeners I personally know (myself included).

I hate to be so vulgar, but it seems you have a serious flaw in the aural processing centers of your mind It's great because it defies genres. No Wave. HA HA HA! The fact that you would even apply that term to this shows not only that the space in your cranium is quite fecund but whatever room is left in there contains a very small and frightened brain.
