Mathcore shouldn't be screamy, it ruins it for me. Mathcore should be interesting, imho.

Music can't be pretentious, it's music. However ironically you are being pretentious by using the word "pretentious" and not knowing what it means

I can't play a scale, and can barely read music. I love mostly old music like this. The Number 12 Looks Like You, The Locust, The Blood Brothers, Fear Before the March Of Flames, Swing Kids, The Fall Of Troy, Just Like Vinyl, Converge, The Chariot, Norma Jean, Past Lives, Jaguar Love, At The Drive-In, Horse The Band, Alexisonfire, etc etc.

I agree, theres always going to be that division. Pretentiousness will always be available in art, but in musicianship it shows. Whether if your forced to improvise or if you choose to when performing. Strait up if you cant keep a tempo or count and something goes wrong on stage, if you dont know the song measure by measure it will fall apart fast if you cant adapt on the spot say if your bass pedal comes loose or your string breaks. Then youll have an audience thinking: I paid $ for this crap

except there's a difference between being creative with time signatures and inserting as many shifts as possible within one song cuz omg we musical geniuzes and we can

Im not saying if you dont play music you cant like this, you just find a much deeper profound respect for it if youve ever performed, recorded and listened to yourself. Or if youve performed in front of people/audience and the pressure to stay together on tempo is immense. Thats where this kind of music shines the most, not in the studio, but in the raw experience on stage. You cant help but think "holy poop how are they so tight and on beat on the off beat? fuck me running"

I agree, but you have to love the exposure. I still agree, Music hasnt change, theyve been pushing boundaries and will continue to do so, whether is Elvis to guns and roses to dillinger escape plan. Its art. Me neither, I've completely forgot how to read cello music, but I remembered to count. Again I agree, I think alot of people can write music like this, but when you create initially you want people to enjoy. Its tricky to digest this, but when I hear this I hear Mozart, the origins of metal.

I agree. It hasnt changed much. They pushed boundaries then and they will now, whether is cannibal corpse to dillinger escape plan. Half it is exposure, but the other half is the love for music. I completely forgot how to read cello music but I remembered how to count, more because I focused on voicework. I agree, alot of people can write music like this, its just harder to digest when others hear it. When I hear tech/death/math metal I hear Mozart and Ludwig, those are the original metalheads.

It's all about exposure. I bet over half kids that do wouldn't have bothered to teach themselves if they weren't forced to in band class. I also think you could place that same statement on any generation of children born into the 50/60's or onward. You think today's any different from the 80's? No. Also, I can't read standard notation unless I have a book next to me telling me what's what but I have a pretty large knowledge of scales/modes and could probably write/play something like this.
