The Monkees - What Am I Doing Hangin' 'Round (Stereo Album Master)

Just a loud mouth Yankee I went down to Mexico.

I didn't have much time to spend, about a week or so.

There I lightly took advantage of a girl who loved me so.

But I found myself a-thinkin' when the time had come to go...

What am I doin' hangin' round?

I should be on that train and gone.

I should be ridin' on that train to San Antone,

What am I doin' hangin' round?

She took me to the garden just for a little walk.

I didn't know much Spanish and there was no time for talk.

Then she told me that she loved me not with words but with a kiss.

And like a fool I kept on thinkin' of a train I could not miss...

What am I doin' hangin' round?

I should be on that train and gone.

I should be ridin' on that train to San Antone,

What am I doin' hangin' round?

Well it's been a year or so, and I want to go back again.

And if I get the money, well I'll ride the same old train.

But I guess your chances come but once and boy I sure missed mine.

And still I can't stop thinkin' when I hear some whistle cryin'....

What am I doin' hangin' round?

I should be on that train and gone.

I should be ridin' on that train to San Antone,

What am I doin' hangin' round?

This is real music, but my main question is, what the heck happened to music?

Did I say David Carridine?  that's "Kung Fu".  I meant David Cassidy.  [of course anyone who knows the Partridge Family knew that]  hope I gave you a good laugh.  :)

The Monkees worked hard and went from a TV-show group to actually become the group they portrayed.  After a while they developed the 'Marilyn Monroe' syndrome where they wanted to do music that reflected their own taste, rather than just crank out the songs the studio wanted them to record because the directors were geared to bringing in the bucks.  This is one of the songs the Monkees did to demonstrate their own talent.  The song they turned down to record this one?  "Sugar, Sugar" recorded by the Archies that went on to be the No. ! hit for 1969.  But for my money, I am so glad they boys decided to record this song instead.

Just saw these guys with Mike and did great job of this tune. One of my favorites and everybody sure knew the lyrics. they've still got it and though they had a good time on stage, it really was about the music this time
