The Moles were an Australian chamber-pop band led by Richard Davies, a gifted singer/songwriter who later found success on American soil both as a solo artist and as one half of the short-lived duo Cardinal.

The Moles' Untune The Sky is simply one of the unheralded peaks of neo-psych. This Australian group, headed by the exceptionally talented Richard Davies, managed to eke several new angles out of shopworn psychedelic influences while throwing a few new curveballs of their own. According to the liner notes, the band recorded this with the help of copious amounts of beer. This may be true, but judging from the warped recordings found on the disc, they very well may have spiked it with something a little stronger.

If you're looking for indie pop that's a little off the beaten path and don't mind if the mood shifts from song to song, this album is definitely worth your attention.

This song was in my head for months. It still is. I finally got the album The Moles - Untune The Sky - SEALED double vinyl about a week ago. Now I'm bidding on the flashbacks & dream sequences, the first ever comprehensive collection. The reissue includes Untune The Sky and Instinct in their original vinyl configurations, which are also compiled on the first CD. The second CD includes their two EPs, 7", and Rarities and Oddities. I.m SO happy! Now, if I could only get them autographed. THAT would be a dream come true!

By members of the band surely you just mean Lou Reed? Moe Tucker, John Cale and Sterling Morrison always seemed to come across as ok to me. As for the Factory scene, well, it was all in the name of "art".... BTW, my favourite VU tune is probably the demo version of Venus and Furs sung by John Cale, wipes the floor with the album version. If you haven't heard it you should try and check it out, it's bound to be on youtube somewhere...

ha! it's weird I've only seen about 15 seconds of an animal collective video and I know exactly what yuo mean,.... about VU I actually meant the members of the band and the whole warhol factory scene of the time, it's all so shallow and pretentious and a lot of people got used and abused, just look at david soul for one. I just think of VU with all that horrid stuff. I get the impression that meeting any of them at the time would of been an unpleasant experiance.

Oh I was well aware of the winding me up a bit...! :-) But other people, the "scene" or whatever, won't put me off liking anything. Yes I know exactly the type you mean, people who only like what they're supposed to like and always have to be seen at the appropriate gigs to raise their "coolness". They are also totally clueless when it comes to their actual knowledge of music. You can't blame a band for their cretinous "fans".... unless it's Animal Collective! ;-)

hehe I was only winding you up a bit ;-) I just don't like the VU ...partly because I think the whole scene was so false and full of really despicable people. I used to love them but the older I get the more pretentious and shallow they seemed until I finally couldn't bear listening to them... I can see they made interesting exciting music, it just leaves me cold.

Any music I like I don't consider "terrible" (though many people may disagree with what I consider is great music) and am certainly not ashamed of... Though I must state I do think "The Murder Mystery" from VU's 3rd album is a load of crud, much like most of their first 2 albums. :-)

It's ok we all like some terrible music, I still listen to Bros sometimes, it's nothing to be ashamed of.

First two VU albums are definitely overrated, but their 3rd album is a classic which I'll never tire of hearing.

I liekd VU when I was a teenager, I honestly think anyone who is into them after age 20 is being a bit ridiculous and boring :)

Don't think I'd really call this chamber-pop, but great song none the less!

Moles did a John Peel session which he couldn't find anything good to say about apart from it wasn't what he was expecting. This tune is one of the four and the others sound like Bay City Rollers meet the Beach Boys on Velvet U's tablets, which frankly is no bad thing. I was surprised at his reaction because it was nothing short of near perfect. If that is chamber-pop then hoorah - but i dunno what chamber pop is. Dig deep for the Moles.
