Johnny Cash in my opinion is the greatest artist to ever record a song! Long live Johnny Cash!

If you're like me, when you get a really good song in your head it stays there. It's been like that for more than 45 years with this one, The Matador. I'll catch myself humming it under my breath and tappinng my foot to the great music created by the Tennessee Three and the studio trumpeteers......if it gets too bad and I need a real fix I'll fire up Youtube or my home stereo system.....Thanks for sharing this.

this was sung by a johnny cash imitator on arc records in 1963, but he didnt sound like johnny. the same guy sang walking proud by steve lawrence on the same album and it was great. the matador was too politically incorrect even for 1963, therefore it was not a hit.

This is about as rare and classic Cash as you can get. It was on an obscure US double-LP called "The Heart of Johnny Cash," in 1969-70, and no place else that I know of (Except maybe the Bear Family CD boxes that cost more than a flight to Europe.) Glad we have youtube to keep this song alive. same album had "Locomotive Man," which I'm about to search for on youtube.

My dad just told me yesterday how he first heard this song. He was in the army in the 60s and was in British Guiana and he went for a drink with his friend. They were in a bar and saw this johnny cash song (that they'd never heard before) and they played it about ten times and got drunk! Then when he came back to england he searched for the album then he found it. And he showd it me today. Wow!

Great tune, one of my favourites by Johnny, there's another faster version, but I have to say, I like this one the best.

Well, i felt it had to be in there, because to me, the low points of Johnny Cash just make the high points look even better. It is part of the legend that is, was, and ever will be Cash, he could sing about the prisoner, and know what he felt, because he had been there himself, it's his connection to the common man. I don't know about you, but, as i said, the man has become a legend now, and this reminds me that Johnny Cash was a simple man who made mistakes and got over them.

Without the bad times, you wouldn't know when the good times occur. Johnny Cash is my God, he will be the one opening the pearly gates when my times has come. Lyle
