All Weller

'Running on the Spot', also from The Gift, is our 4th choice from '82. This defined The Jam's new sound as more layered vocal harmonies and multi-layered guitars, driven by Bruce's and Rick's robust rhythm section, yielded an amazing track. With another social lyric highlighting the tortoisesque pace of progress in the face of gritted determination and self-belief, this echoed the sentiment of 'Ghosts'. Perhaps this also represented a double-meaning by symbolising Weller's feelings towards The Jam? By now he'd already mapped out his post-Jam plans and felt constrained by The Jam's line up and formulaic approach; especially as others in the group battled with his new directions. What do you think? See this track live from Bingley Hall in March '82.The Jam - Running On The Spot - Live

the best line is "intelligence should be our first weapon" - i think a cry to free ourselves from the burden and misplaced loyalty to things like religion, nationalism and patriotism. Don't get fooled again!!

When I figured this out on guitar I suddenly realized what a cop of "Dear Prudence" the progression was. Strange, I've always hated that song but "Running On The Spot" is one of my fave Jam numbers. This version is killer- and I can't believe Buckler is singing on stage!
