The Ink Spots were a popular vocal group that helped define the musical genre that led to rhythm & blues and rock and roll,

and the subgenre doo-wop. They and the Mills Brothers, another black vocal group of the 1930s and 1940s, gained much acceptance in the white community.

I think Echo means the past, the Shadow is the present, and me is the self image of what we wish to be. Notice how he starts with "I walk with my Shadow, I talk with my Echo, but where is that gal I love." People always bring up the past, they can't escape it no matter how hard they try. Then the shadow is probably many things. The Husk of oneself through age and deterioration. We walk with our shadow because our shadow will never leave us, we cannot leave from our own bodies. Then there is "me." It is quite difficult to describe ourselves, we exaggerate ourselves all the time when in reality we just everyday people surviving. It is when we neglect our survival for a dream, we lose sight of ourselves. Soon, our dream becomes a reality even for a short moment. It is through that dream at which an individual learns and bonds with another. All of that slowly disappears due to natural causes such as death doing us apart or the fact that we as humans lose interest as proven by science and everyday life. So in actual, we are left with our shadow that is chained to us through the forces of light, our echo which is our voice, our past, and "me," alone. "Where is that gal that I loved so much?" She either died before the man's time or she simply left him and if you love something you let it go. It is only through letting things go does one start to feel guilt, truly homesick because what's a home/meaning in life without someone to hold on to?
