Electric guitar pioneer and jazz guitar great George Barnes http://georgebarneslegacy.com was a consummate and innovative musician whose influential career spanned 44 years. This track was recorded on 23 September 1946, when George was 25 years old and had recently been discharged from the army. With Boyd Rolando on tenor sax, Frank Rullo on vibes, Earl Backus on rhythm guitar, Mike Rubin on bass, and Dick Baldridge on drums, THE GEORGE BARNES SEXTET was George's first jazz recording under his own name, and was produced for the Keynote label by Harry Lim in ABC's Studio E, Chicago.

I discovered George Barnes through listening to Chet Atkins. He was apparently a huge fan and admirer. There is a fantastic recording of Royal Garden Blues featuring both guitarists. Mr. Barnes was probably one of the best guitarists (and musicians) of the last century, no doubt. I wonder why he did not receive more exposure and recognition.

I was introduced to George Barnes Guitar through his Brother Harry Barnes. George Barnes was the guitar player on all the three sons Popular Recordings. He played on hundreds of Rock and Rock Chart Toppers in the 1950s. And of course he backed many Blues and Pop Singer before the 50s. He was child prodigy on the Guitar.

George has a real blues feel in his touch, something a lot of players don't have. This is a great piece of music played to perfection, well done George.

Some of the most beautiful electric guitar playing I have ever heard over the last half century. Django would be proud. Great sound on this upload, BTW...thanks!!

Barnes interviewed by Sam Ross in early 1939: "When I was five years old I first started to play an instrument. It was a piano.... I played that while I was in school. Then [when] I was ten [in 1931 or 1932] my dad lost everything, his home and all that and we had to move. After that we didn't have a piano. So I got a German accordion about two years later [in about 1933 or 1934] and then I got a banjo uke and after that a guitar which I've been playing up until now.... I played in my first [band] a year and a half ago [in 1937]."
