To me it feels like his friend got caught up in something like a gang or legal trouble, and now that he's in jail/prison he won't confess to anything. He won't try to escape it. He stubbornly stays where he is, and they can no longer be friends because the singer believes what his friend did is seriously wrong and wished he could have seen it coming so he could have stopped his friend. That's just my take.
