Smith is a drunk and a drug addict who got lucky enough to make inroads with Tavistock and social programmers that helped out his career over the long haul, especially John Peel who was a special envoy to the BBC (British brainwashing corporation). I think that The Fall was afforded the privileges it got due to Smith's mind-numbing form of "singing" and the Fall's repetitive "music" that tends to bludgeon one over the head and dumb one down and that's the whole point: to rewire your brain so that it interprets nonsense jibberish and loud walls of sound as being soothing and to dumb down your spiritual level of intuition. It doesn't take long watching Smith in interviews to realize that he is simply a garden variety sociopath with a bit more creative flair than most sociopaths (aka to rattle off an interesting turn of phrase now and again with the help of alcohol and drugs).
