It's a damn tough life full of toil and strifeWe whalermen undergo. And we don't give a damn when the day is doneHow hard the winds did blow.Cause we're homeward bound from the Arctic groundWith a good ship, taut and freeAnd we don't give a damn when we drink our rumWith the girls of Old Maui.Rolling down to Old Maui, me boysRolling down to Old MauiWe're homeward bound from the Arctic groundRolling down to Old Maui.Once more we sail with a northerly galeTowards our island home. Our mainmast sprung, our whaling done,And we ain't go far to roam.Six hellish months we passed awayOn the cold Kamchatka Sea,But now we're bound from the Arctic groundRolling down to Old Maui.Rolling down to Old Maui, me boysRolling down to Old MauiWe're homeward bound from the Arctic groundRolling down to Old Maui.Once more we sail with a northerly galeThrough the ice and wind and rain.Them coconut fronds, them tropical lands,We soon shall see again. Our stuns'l booms are carried awayWhat care we for that sound?A living gale is after us,Thank God we're homeward bound.Rolling down to Old Maui, me boysRolling down to Old MauiWe're homeward bound from the Arctic groundRolling down to Old Maui. How soft the breeze through the island trees,Now the ice is far astern.Them native maids, them tropical gladesIs a-waiting our return.Even now their big brown eyes look outHoping some fine day to seeOur baggy sails runnin' 'fore the galesRolling down to old Maui.Rolling down to Old Maui, me boysRolling down to Old MauiWe're homeward bound from the Arctic groundRolling down to Old Maui.Rolling down to Old Maui, me boysRolling down to Old MauiWe're homeward bound from the Arctic groundRolling down to Old Maui.

Makes me feel like climbing up to the crow's nest of a big pirate ship, listening to this below me and joining in while the sun sets into the horizon. Fresh air, sea spray and the stars above.

I showed this to my grandfather who was a sailor. He looked at me, smiled at me, and started to tear up. He said, "boy, if you ever get the chance.. Sail, and be free". This song brings back the memories of so many generations. It's truly a piece of art. And thanks to the shanties I used to listen to, and still do. And thanks to my grandpa. I'm now halfway to that of my life goal of setting sail. :)

This makes me want to drink scotch, grow a beard, and carve scrimshaws until the night grows pale.

I know five ex whalers here in Scotlands Outer Hebrides who are still alive and who worked on the whalers out of Maui for Christen Salvessen of Leith in Scotland. They are well up in years now but thankfully someone is interviewing them for a book and a film. When they pass on a legend passes on with them.

Okay, so here are the EXACT lyrics to this version: It's a damn tough life full of toil and strifeWe whalermen undergo. And we don't give a damn when the day is doneHow hard the winds did blow.'Cause we're homeward bound from the Arctic groundWith a good ship, taut and freeAnd we don't give a damn when we drink our rumWith the girls of Old Maui.(chorus)Rolling down to Old Maui, me boysRolling down to Old MauiWe're homeward bound from the Arctic groundRolling down to Old Maui.Once more we sail with a northerly galeTowards our island home. Our mainmast sprung, our whaling done,And we ain't got far to roam.Six hellish months we've passed awayOn the cold Kamchatka Sea,But now we're bound from the Arctic groundRolling down to Old Maui.(chorus)Once more we sail with a northerly galeTo the ice and wind and rain.Them coconut fronds, them tropical landsWe soon shall see again. Our stu'n's'l bones is carried awayWhat care we for that sound?A living gale is after us,Thank God we're homeward bound.(chorus)How soft the breeze through the island trees,Now the ice is far astern.Them native maids, them tropical gladesIs a-waiting our return.Even now their big brown eyes look outHoping some fine day to seeOur baggy sails runnin' 'fore the galesRolling down to old Maui.(chorus)x2
