I vaguely recollect hearing Colin Melloy talk about this song. I believe he said the inspiration for this song came when they on a tour stop in San Francisco. He happened to venture down Valencia Street in the Mission District. The Mission used to be a hub of Hispanic culture; it is pretty much become techie and white. Valencia Street is not a hub for gang activity, but for some reason this whole West Side Story drama played out in his mind

It's crazy how just Meloy's facial expressions and acting when he's trying to save her and when he realizes he can't makes me feel so empty in my stomach. It's such a weird music video because it's so strange and silly until the last scene and that's so tragic.
