I don't think it's a guitar at all. I play guitar, in fact I had a rock n roll band in 1962 awful as it was. Things were not as clever as far as effects were concerned in those days. I think it is some kind of keyboard instrument piano type of thing. If you had a Vox AC30 and Watkins copycat and Fender Strat back in those days you were king.

Ooops! seems that I might be wrong about the 12 String! Somebody had already posted that Mike Maxfield never used a 12 String! In that case, it could be 2 electric guitar tracks, one played in a low register, and one played an octave higher.

I'm 99% sure that it's a 12 String Electric Guitar. Probably a Burns, a Rickenbacker, or a Fender. The simple early part of the melody line in the song was the first thing my Uncle taught me to do on the guitar in about 1966. The really tricky bit (and it's still tricky even now!) took a good few years more to learn!! Still actively playing the Guitar today, thanks to The Cruel Sea!

I just now listened to the "Cruel Sea" as done by Mike Maxfield and really liked it. Before I listen to it again I hope his name and talent as well as the Dakotas will shine brightly in the sky of instrumental/rock/groups. He deserves a place in the heavens by himself!
