A VERY worn out copy of one of my favorites from 1965, The Critters' "Younger Girl" by John Sebastian of the Lovin' spoonful. This is my favorite version of the song. Again sorry for the very poor quality of this one! KAPP RECORDS K-752

I haven't heard this song in over 40 yrs. Thanks for the sentimental journey into the past. I had forgotten that the Lovin Spoonful were apparently not the only group to record this song. I like the Critters version the best.

Love the song but it was spring 1966.

Chris Darway and his autoharp. I always felt "Mr. Dieingly Sad" was their best song.

This song is actually from 1966. The Critters was released 5/28/66, peaking at #42 in 9 weeks of charting. The Hondells version was released the same week, 5/28/66, peaking at #52 in 9 weeks of charting. The Lovin' Spoonful never put it out as a single, they recorded it on their 1965 debut album. All info from Whitburn's book "Top Pop Singles 1955-2002."

I do not recall the Critters having ever recorded this. I only knew it by the Spoonful. I like both versions though. Thanks for uploading!

Spacepartrolman: Darin told the anecdote in his1970 Las Vegas act. He never mentioned Sebastian by name. He sang a few bars of each song, said he turned down both and why --- -and then admitted he waited for years until his next hit record. It was funny & entertaining. And it speaks volumes about how no one can predict a hit from a miss. I bet the teacher who didn't like the poem is in agreement. I'm happy YouTube exists. Our conversation is a best example of friendly communication. .

I didnt know he turned down summer in the city it was a poem that johns brother wrote for school and his teacher didnt like it so of course it was a hit his brother may have been in the lovin spoonful when john left leo feist owns sebastians publishing company he gave a lecture at the berklee college of music that elitism is the most important thing in music the guy that owned electra records said if the spoonful would have stayed with them they would have been paid

spacepatrolman - You are correct that Darin wouldn't touch this song and for the reason you stated. He also turned down "Summer In The City" and had misgivings about it..

salchst - John Sebastian is as American as apple pie. In his youth, he was a bad boy. He slept with a lot of younger girls. Hopefully, all were of legal age. No one knows for sure.

This is one of the very few times that the composer's version is the runner up. John Sebastian wrote this for his group "The Lovin' Spoonful". But the best version is by The Critters. In any case, it's an inadvertent ode to pedophilia, and so is Steve Lawrence singing "Go Away Little Girl."

The slight pause is what makes it confusing--One look in her eyes and you forget everything you had ready to say. Listen to it again. I remember a few other oldies that had me confused for the same reason.

Does anyone know what the heck this line means: "You have ready to say and I saw her today" ?? Is he trying to say "You have YET to say....", cause that would make more sense. I don't know, maybe that's the way they talk in England (was John Sebastian English??)

Quality not so bad! I generally like the first version of a song I hear. In this case, I've heard the Spoonful's version hundreds of times and this production takes no back seat! Thanks for posting!
