On this day in 1967 {June 11th} the Byrds performed at 'The Fantasy Fair and Magic Mountain Music Festival' in Marin County, California...At the time the group's "Have You Seen Her Face?" was at #96 on Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart; two weeks later on June 25th, 1967 it would peak at #74 {for 1 week}, and that would also be its fourth and last week on the chart...The calendar year of 1967 was a good one for the Byrds, they had a total of five records make the Top 100, the others were "So You Want to Be a Rock 'N Roll Star" {#29}, "My Back Pages" {#30}, "Lady Friend" {#82}, and "Goin' Back" {#89}...

They weren't always bad live. It was just that Crosby railroaded the gig herein to his own political station. The band's heart is clearly not in it. i am glad their performance was excluded from the Monterey film. It is appalling. I believe Crosby was ousted shortly after. Perhaps he should have formed a more politically-motivated group in parallel with The Byrds. I think the others were well pissed off at his outbursts that bookended many of the songs. Selfish, perhaps. His excitement at trying to pour some daylight on the twisted politics of the sixties had overspilled into his band. Shame, really. It should have been poured into the songs; then we might have had some really interesting space-folk-political-country-Moog stuff!. Anyway, on record they sounded great.

If Gene would have stayed and Crosby just shut the hell up. This could have been one of the greatest bands of all time. Can you imagine all the great songs Crosby and Gene would have had on the later albums?

God, they really butchered all their songs live, didn't they? One of the greatest American bands ever, but they really sucked live!

Crosby is an insufferable egotist.

Part of the problem was that unknown to McGuinn and the rest of the Byrds, Crosby was sneaking off to rehearse with Buffalo Springfield for their performance the very next night. He filled in for Neil Young, who had temporarily quit that band. Of course, that helped plant the seeds for the formation of Crosby, Stills, Nash (and later) Young the very next year.

Actually he is an okay guitarist, a great songwriter beautiful singer for either harmony or lead...What more can one ask of a member of a band...

This is a poorly mixed live song...The guys are singing basically what they should be...If it was mixed properly you would hear a really nice blend of lead vocal and harmony.

I always thought Gene Clark was the best writer and Gram was second.

I wonder if Crosby cringes when he hears recordings of himself from those years. What a jerk.

other than contention.

Bad until the Clarence White line up. After that they were awesome. Crosby is an idiot.

much as I love the original Byrds they were always a bad live band. I used to think it was because with the exception of Mcguinn they were all weak instrumentalists but It's starting to dawn on me that it was only Crosby who was really bad!

I have the same impression when I listen to some songs like "Here Without You" (some versions) among others.

I fucking love The Byrds. One of the absolute best bands ever. I was thinking, as I was listening to this wonderful recording, how these guys could have really used a handfull of chromatic tuners. But they might have been too high on drugs to control such things anyway. Thanks for a very nice upload! :)

He didn't give the LSD to the politicians, Crosby took it all by himself.
