The Byrds - "I'll Feel A Whole Lot Better" - 9/16/65 video free download

From the band's 2nd out of three appearances on "Shindig", this is a prerecorded performance with live vocals.

The guitar solo is chopped in half, plus no guitar outro in order to fit the show's very strict time contraints.

This performance also exposes the band's weakness as a "Live act", which they were indeed known for.

Notice on the close-up of Michael Clarke, his foot is not even on the kick drum pedal!!!

The stiff, plodding sound of the rythym section, coupled with the kind of music they were doing, and the '60's sound system situation; all these things really worked against the band.

It's a kick to hear Gene Clark try to cram the word "Probably" into damn near two syllables, as they are playing the song extra fast to fit the allocated time.

Bass players: This is GREAT place to learn the Bass line, because here, Chris Hillman is louder than everything else. :-)

junkie4vids is totally correct. This track is absolutely live. They are rushing. You dont prerecord rushing. Every note as observed corresponds directly to the video. The vocals sound amazing because the Byrds had outstanding harmony singers. Or have you not heard of David Crosby.

Heh, McGuinn's guitar solo got cut short. I don't know if that was by mistake or on purpose. Weird.

The Byrds were my favorite band, after the Beatles. Guess when I grew up?

LOL ! My boyfriend's band rocked this in the clubs circa 1966? And of course, my boyfriend had lead guitar and really blew the "bridge" portion through the rafters ! Oh my... What memories..........

Not a true lip-synch but close. I think the instruments and backing vocals are prerecorded and maybe even the screams. The backing vocal harmonies are too "in tune" for the time especially without monitors. The drummer does actually hit the cymbal. I know they probably used directional mikes but you think there would be bleed-over. This was good enough to fake out many of us who really like the "live" performance. As for chopping up the songs, the Beatles would do that in their concerts which were only 30 minutes long. You can tell this with Twist and Shout. In their concerts, for some reason, they didn't perform all of it; probably to save John's voice. I would give this video a solid B+.

Still great to hear them sing live and their bizarre 3 voices = 2 part harmony. Lovely.

McGuin looks like a tripped out serial killer in this video. Those sunglasses he wore were some fucked up shit. The band was killer. One of my favorites as a young teen growin up in the mid to later 60s. RIP Gene Clark.

Really! Too bad he got haggard looking as he aged but I guess that's what years of hard drinking will do to you

Thanks so much Christian for the loads. The whole list is a Byrds Tribute. Love the reviews and comments that go with them. Treasure and to cherish.

So often today, groups seem to consist of one guy with a bunch of interchangeable sidemen. What made the 60s crop so great is that they were all packed with great characters. Just look at them! Hip professor McGuinn, sensitive doomed poet Clark, mischievous imp Crosby, beautiful beatnik Clarke... and they didn't even zoom in on cool-as-fuck muso Hillman. We were spoiled.
