The Fontane Sisters never really reached any kind of stardom despite being regulars on The Perry Como Show for many years. This is their version of the song done earlier by the Tarriers. This is similar to the Harry Belafonte song Day-O with the addition of some lyrics from Hill And Gully Rider. This matches third party content which means in this case, you'll have to wait for an advertisement to finish before the video starts.

The Fontane Sisters registered 26 hits on the Music Vendor charts (Billboard and Cashbox were also charting the hits but each magazine used a different formula) Music Vendor based it's charts on sales in stores and jukebox popularity, Cashbox on sales in stores only and during the early years Billboard had 3 charts (one each for sales in stores, jukebox play and DJ radio play.....their charts however were only 20 to 30 records).  The 26 Fontane hits on the Music Vendor charts were from 1954 through 59 and did not include a number of RCA hits in the very early 50s.....I would say that definitely made them stars.

UNLUCKY 13 or LUCKY 13???: "The Banana Boat Song" peaked at No. 13 and spent a total of 18 weeks on Billboard's Hot Top 100 in 1957... {Was it bad luck to have stopped at #13 or good luck that it spent 18 weeks on the charts???} Also in 1957 there were five other versions of this song that charted; The Tarriers {No. 4}, Harry Belafonte {No. 5}, Steve Lawrence {No. 18}, and Sarah Vaughan {No. 19}. Stan Freberg's version was actually a parody of this song, it reached No. 25...

This is not the original. It was produced a few years earlier. Anyone know where it can be found?
