It's a metaphor from the book "Don Quijote de la Mancha". There is a chapter where Quijote (who is insane) passes by a windmill farm and thinks windmills are giants and attacks them (with devastating results for him of course). Therefore, windmills represent great obstacles in our lives. At least, that is my interpretation.

This is by far one of the best songs in the alan parson's collection. I still think that the alan parsons project is one of the best bands out there, and that today's "music", if you can call it that, is all the same; repetative stuff that get's old faster than you can say, " Broadway's Dead." And to add to it, i'm only in my teens, and I'm fully aware of this.
