Another song dealing with military recruitment is Steppenwolf's "Draft Resister", featured on the album "Monster" (Dunhill # DS-50066), which praised the "courage" of those who opposed the draft and looked at the punishment that they faced:

"Here's to all the draft resisters who will fight for sanity

When they march them off to prison in this land of liberty

Heed the threat and awesome power of the mighty Pentagon

Which is wasting precious millions on the toys of Washington

Shame, disgrace and all dishonor, wrongly placed upon their heads

Will not rob them of the courage which betrays the innocent"

Ironically, I beat the draft by attending West Point.  SS mailed a letter to my home address and my father responded that the Army already had me.

Apparently every copy of this album wore out the same way ,via the "I can see the shape of the vinyl through the sleeve"? lol. Had a copy that looks exactly the same. Fyi...some versions of this record had a typo that said "Draft Register" Yikes!

Mostly we wanted to end war as an inevitable consequence of humankind, of course we thought we could, such an undertaking can't succeed without optimism and dedication. We also wanted to bring the boys home, I marched with many Vietnam Veterans Against The War, their dedication to the cause was inspiring, these men had seen the worst of mankind and their country that betrayed them, and though they were bent from their horrific experience they refused to break, stood proud and defiant to tell America the truth about what their government had done. I was one of the lucky ones, I only got 18 months and worked in a hospital for 5 years, some of the resisters did the whole 5 year stretch. I'm certain that we shortened the war and saved some lives, but 30 years later the same scenario of government lies invaded Iraq and the cycle repeated again. When will they ever learn!

I think it's right and healthy that there's been more and more honor paid to Vietnam veterans who were brave enough to put their lives on the line in doing what they thought was their duty to their country. When I saw the graves of German soldiers at the D-Day beaches, I had the same thought. But it's also important to remember that, no matter what courage and dedication were shown by those soldiers, the causes that they fought for were actually racist, horrific, and wrong. And, as Steppenwolf reminds us here, it's also important to remember the courage shown by the Vietnam draft resisters who were not only on the right side of this issue but who also, in many cases, had to wreck their own lives in order to be true to their conscience and convictions. I'd never previously run across this song: thanks very much for uploading it.

i think joan baez said that there are too many love dovey songs and not enough protest songs in the modern era and i would tend to agree  we dont need gangsta rap to form political opinions thanks

Where is the political descent in todays music? At least back them, someone had the guts to say: "Hey, this is all phuked up, and I'll not have any part in it."
