@chrisocony. It's a reference to the 19th century struggle between Britain and Russia for control of Afghanistan...hence the 'great, great game' reference...but hey, history does nothing if not repeat itself...

It's just another wonderful, brilliant song from Malkmus. I am always struck by the ominous line" "The tension grows in Afghanistan..." This record was released 7 months before September 11th.

@mrshiggs1 I always thought the lyric was 'I had a crap gin and tonic at Wounded Knee' and that Malkmus was being an even greater (albeit lovable) smart ass by making the association between British and American imperialism - hence the parallels between the 'Great Game' of the C19 and the more recent intervention in Afghanistan. But then again I may have heard it wrong. Only the great man himself knows :-)
