On this day in 1964 {August 22nd} "It's A Sin To Tell A Lie" by Tony Bennett entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart for a one week stay at position #99. Nine years earlier in 1955 Somethin' Smith & the Redheads took their version to #7 on Billboard's Top 100 chart and spent 23 weeks on the Top 100. And on Billboard's Hot Country Singles chart Slim Whitman's version reached #21 in 1971. Mr. Bennett, aka Anthony Dominick Benedetto, celebrated his 87th birthday nineteen days ago on August 3rd.

I've been looking for this since 1955 when it came out. Wonder how many people remember Gravel Gertie from the Dick Tracy cartoon.

Thank you for posting this song. I have been trying to find this and finally found it! When I was a little boy, this was a favorite album of my late mother. I was in tears tonight thinking about this song and my mother. I was five years old then and now 59 and can still cry. Thank you so much!!

Very nice old time hit. Catchy tune and interesting lyrics. I heard a version by Bobby Vinton, that is just terrific as well.
