"The Parting Glass" by Shaun Davey, as found on the Waking Ned Devine soundtrack.

Includes the poem Forever In Your Debt by Kirk Jones, and vocals by Liam O'Maonlai.

"Forever In Your Debt"

With thanks to those who blew the wind,

And those who sailed the ship,

We sailed it tight against the tide,

And I shall be forever in your debt.

All the money that e'er I had

I spent it in good company

And all the harm I've ever done

Alas, it was to none but me

And all I've done for want of wit

To memory now, I can't recall

So fill to me the parting glass

Good night and joy be to you all!

Fill to me the parting glass

And drink a health whate'er befalls

Then gently rise and softly call

Good night and joy be to you all!

Of all the comrades that e'er I had

They're sorry for my going away

And all the sweethearts that e'er I had

They'd wish me one more day to stay.

Since it fell into my lot

that I should rise, and you should not

I'll gently rise and softly call

Good night and joy be to you all!

But since it fell into my lot

That I should rise and you should not

I'll gently rise and softly call

Good night and joy be to you all!

So fill to me the parting glass

And drink a health whate'er befalls

Then gently rise and softly call

Good night and joy be to you all!

nice irish parting song.. before auld lang syne became popular. nice song to sing along after getting really drunk and falling off the chair. i love it. too bad my friends don't know the words to it.. then again, it's a chore waking them up and have them sing along.. off key..

I'm playing this for my father...he is dying as I type. Please send prayers for a swift and gentle passing.

I had listened to Ed Sheeran's album about a thousand times and suddenly one day at Starbucks around St. Patrick's day, I heard this song and it made me happy to know that Ed keeps his influences with him!

For some reason, watching Waking Ned Devine again has been in my mind a lot lately. Here's a song from the movie, raise a glass with me to all we miss. Shaun Davey - The Parting Glass

First heard this many years ago and to this day, it moves me greatly. Some of the lyrics recall my own journey. I hope in my life, I've loved without caution and given without tabulating costs. That said, I believe I'll pour a glass of Jameson's... and look heavenward and toast my daughter. You made it before me and I will thank God every day for the joy your life brought me. Did you know you now have a granddaughter? She's beautiful too.
