I too cry every time I hear this. My first wife turned me on to Seals and Croft and this song, when I heard it early in our marriage, expressed my idealism about us, our love, our children, and our devotion (to Subud, not Baha'i). But the marriage ended and our children, all grown, have troubles of their own. We know ourselves too little, but must keep trying to know, and to love.

I always thought this song really highlighted Jim Seals and Dash Crofts contrasting voices. When they sang their other songs they sang mainly harmonies that blended their voices perfectly. While this song also has harmony sections, it also allowed them both to shine in their own right. A true masterpiece of music and one of their absolute best.
