This was from the 1966 Columbia recording "An Historic Reunion, Sara and Maybelle, the Original Carters". Even after more than 2 decades of not recording together, Sara and Maybelle went into the studio and cut the album in less than a day. These ladies were used to laying doing a single take in the days when the recordings were on wax and a retake meant shaving off the wax and starting over (they recorded 4 on the afternoon of August 1st 1927 with A.P. and 2 the following day without A.P., including the solo by Sara, "Single Girl, Married Girl" that Sara didn't like but said was the one that sold the most). Sara's was truly a unique voice and in a day when you had to be able to cut through static and project, her voice could always be counted on. This song was written by Sara. She sent it on a tape back to the family. Johnny Cash heard it and started promoting the idea of a reunion album (producing the album). He hoped to be present for part of the recording and it was said he never imagined that they would do everything in less than a day! Maybelle passed on October 23, 1978 and Sara Carter Bayes followed on January 8th, 1979. Country Music magazine. included a section in its issue 200 (Holiday 1999) that was from The Journal of the American Academy for the Preservation of Old Time Country, issue number 52, December 1999 on the Carter Family commemorating the 100th anniversary of Sara Carter's birth. The noted Country Music historian Charles K. Wolfe wrote an article (pgs 5-6) for this titled: Sara Carter "The Mother of Country Music". I was thrilled to be watching TV when Burl Ives announced the induction of the Original Carter Family to the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1970 (Sara and Maybelle both walked on stage to receive the honor, sadly A.P. had passed on Nov 7, 1960).

This is one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard. Such a sad and haunting voice. Sara and the Carter Family left behind music that will never be duplicated.

I think Maybelle deserves all the recognition she has received over the years. But I do agree that Sarah (and A.P.!) have been unfairly overlooked. It was the three of them together that provided the foundation that all popular music across all genres stands on today. But thankfully, bit-by-bit, the entire Carter Family is making a comeback, mesmerizing new generations with their simple but profoundly deep and beautiful music. Thanks to folks like you, Hexmeyer. Much appreciate this.

A soul singer long before the term was invented. One can't begin to describe the depth of soul in that voice.

I agree. Everybody these days talks about Maybelle like she was the whole Carter Family enterprise. I'd rather listen to Sara on any song on any day!
