The Battle of Stalingrad (September 1942 - 2 February 1943) was one of the most devastating major battles of World War II and is often seen as the symbolic turning point of the war.

After the German attack on the Soviet Union (Operation Barbarossa) came to a halt before Moscow in the summer of 1942, the Wehrmacht launched a major offensive in the southwest of the Soviet Union. The strategic goals were the city of Stalingrad (now Volgograd) and the oilfields of the Caucasus.

When the 6th Army of the Wehrmacht, together with their Romanian and Italian allies, already controlled 90% of Stalingrad, the Red Army completely surrounded the city in the "Operation Uranus" in mid-November. In the ensuing pocket battle (German: Kesselschlacht, cauldron battle) both sides fought bitterly and suffered extensive losses for supremacy in the city.

After a month long struggle to survive and a failed attempt to break through the circumvallation, the remains of the 6th Army surrendered on the 2nd of February, 1943. Due to the continous fighting, cold and hunger, over 150,000 German soldiers lost their lives inside the pocket. In total more than 700,000 people died around Stalingrad.

CAUTION!

I won't tolerate any racist, discriminatory or in any other form inappropriate comments! This song neither glorifies war, nor National Socialism, but should be considered as a historical work.

"No, we don't glorify anything, we just tell stories about things that have happened." (Rikard Sundén, founding member of Sabaton)

----------

This almost feels like half of the song is singing from both sides of the conflict, and I really like that.

Hermann,do you even fucking know about the soviet union's purge trials? Stalin killed like, oh, I don't know, like 12 million people? I may be Russian, but I'm disappointed in my people. One thing that's kinda funny is that I'm a relative of Georgy Zhukov, who was Stalin's top general.

Two things: Am I the only one who hears Stalin's fortress shall fall instead of Stalin's fortress on fire. And what does Mratnimiat mean?

Correction 1,700,000 people died in and around StalinGrad. Your forgetting the 1 million civilian casualties, because Stalin said that they people were to not leave the city. This was especially fatal in bombing raids and general survival in the long battle.

Propaganda loss values! In reality germans lost(when i say "lost", i mean lost as in dead, wounded and missing) about 850k(of which 108k were captured), and the Red Army lost up to 1.100k if i remember correctly. Of those 1.1. million soviet, only 490k were dead. How many germans were dead exactly i don't know. But there were many more dead people than 700k. This battle was not only a symbolical, but also a strategic victory as the German had to pull out of the caucasus and were doomed to run out of fuel and petrochemic products, because they failed to capture the rich caucasus oilfields'(groznyj, baku, etc).
