I'm not trying to promote smoking or anything. but he has said in interviews that his unique voice comes from too many late nights drinking whiskey and smoking cigarettes. If he didn't smoke his voice would be totally different. It may be better but it would be totally different, and I think it would be for the worse. His scratchy voice is part of his signature sound . I think good country music benefits from a rougher voice. Not every song has to be sung by a clear throated vocalist.
