Rush, "Tom Sawyer" guitar lesson. In this Riff of the Day we're using the CMAT Mods Analog Chorus combined with the defined overdrive from the Mojo Hand FX Rook Royale . Tom Sawyer is a riff that is often simplified with power chords but it loses a lot of the magic and tension created by Alex Lifeson's uses of suspended chords. The basic progression for the verse is E, D, A, C while the second part applies a ascending and descending riff that locks in tight with the bass. Rush's Tom Sawyer is a great example of thinking outside the power chord box and how alternative chord choices can add extra dimension and feeling to your songs. Enjoy your daily guitar lesson.

Your lessons are the best - you assume a certain amount of guitar knowledge. I like your presentation because you don't show where to put every note and strum.THANKS!

I played this wrong for over 20 years with just straight-ahead major bar chords. I think a lot of people do that. I could always see Alex's hands looked funny on the 2nd and 4th chords, but sometimes his hands do look funny when he is just playing major bar chords (seems to use his index and pinkie instead of index and wring fingers). It sounds so much better with the right chords - it adds some tension.

Thanks, that sounds correct. This seems to be a chord progression that everyone does, but is easy mess up very slightly and make sound wrong.

Thanks for doing these Andy - just a minor tweak but Lifeson doesn't palm mute the running low E - but not looking a gift horse in the mouth - you are great for doing these.
