To be honest, Roy Acuff wasn´t really a great singer, was he?

This "flutter lick" by guitarist (a 5,3, trill, which then walks down) (and it may be a dobro) is the first 'signature lick' I have found in country music- the guitar solos or fills by prior country artists (e.g., Dalhard, Jimmy Rogers,Carters, Jimmy Davis) seem non-distinct and diatonic in nature--Am I missing someone?

You could write a complete history of country music, based just on the evolution of the original version of this song to Willie Nelson's cover of it.

It's amazing how many people on here are lying. I respect Roy Acuff who recorded it first and Fred Rose who wrote it, but being the original does not always make it the best version and certainly not the signature version. Willie Nelson's owns the signature version regardless of him covering it. He added a different arragement to it and slowed it down and of course added his own unique singing style. So to some extent Willie's version is still an original. In the same way that Willie wrote and recorded Crazy and Hello Walls first, but they are signature songs by Patsy Cline and Farron Young.

JohnLeePedimorw,Read their life story and you will find the truth,it was written for Roy Acuff by Fred Rose and it says in both of their biography's that was where it came from.Roy pitched it too Hank Williams and he recorded it in 1946 and Roy recorded it after Hank did. LHW

Why can't people comment on country music without getting all self-righteous? This is a song about lost love. Anyone can relate to it, not just Bible-thumping homophobes.

Your father was a respectable man to hold those kind of standards.

My father respected Roy Acuff. That was a lot from my dad, because he was very picky with high standards for performance and morality, and men had to be men, and women had to be women. Roy passed the test.
