A famous Chinese song 玫瑰玫瑰我愛你 sung in English. In those days, long distance romance was an impossible task. Also racism and discrimination was the order of the day.
The English language lyrics were written by Wynford Vaughan Thomas. It was recorded by Frankie Laine and the Norman Luboff Choir, with Paul Weston and his orchestra in 1951, and released by Columbia Records. The song reached #3 on the Billboard magazine music charts.
Some people believed this song was dedicated to Rose Chan, an infamous Malayan stripper of the 40s and 50s.....

Very nicely done! I remember this song being played now and then in the 1950s when the WWII GIs were thinking about their days in the Pacific. Beautiful film clips here and some very beautiful Asian ladies shown. Shame on the critics!9 years ago

Rose Chan began her stripping with a wardrobe malfunction in 1951. I suspect the "Rose" got inserted into the song when translated into English, but the original song predated Rose Chan (and her stripping). Nonetheless, Chan may have accounted for "Rose" creeping into the song.10 years ago

I agree that the song can be taken as racist, but I don't take it that way. Also, the lyrics seem consistent with Rose possibly not being socially proper, which does not imply she is not of good character. What I know of the real Rose Chan myself is only what I've seen here at YouTube.Related Videos
