I don't want to create a controversy but when some say "this is the first title of the Rock and Roll music history" listen "When the Levee Break" by Kansas Joe McCoy and Memphis Minnie in 1929 or simply "Rock and Roll" by the Boswell sisters in 1934. ;) Then, enjoy this Sam Philips' Sun Records, Memphis !

This is glorified Boogie-Woogie. They marketed in as R&B, but at the core it's boogie music. A few years later Bill Haley comes along and voila! They re-market it as Rock and Roll. By the way, Haley covered this song, and it's his version that is considered the prototype Rock and Roll record. But none of this would have happened if Sam Phillips didn't hear the original, and encouraged the band to record it, on broken equipment they had.

Eric has lost his mind. Rock and Roll by the Boswell Sisters in not RocknRoll. It was watered down Swing music at best. When the levee breaks was uptempo Blues. And yes the Blues could be uptempo. Now real historians know that 1939’s release of Roll 'Em Pete by Big Joe Turner and the great Boogie-Woogie pianist Pete Johnson was the first true RockNRoll song. Anyone disagreeing just go listen to the those two songs Eric proposes and then compare them to Roll Em’ Pete and tell me which one is the early precursor to RocknRoll. In fact, early RocknRoll was born from a cross between R&B and Boogie-Woogie (a more groovier form of Ragtime), NOT R&B and Country as white historians want to claim. Elvis’s early music was a combo of those two (R&B and Blue Grass, a form of country music) before he went pure RockNRoll, at which point he started covering classic Blues and with Gospel songs with his own flavor; Basically appropriating black music and black style he had grown up with in Memphis. Not to understate his contribution though, which was musically bridging the white and black cultures like no one before him bc he blended genres.

Man.... our cars today just look like sh!t, compared to these early 50's beauties. Man, what I'd give for a 53-54 Chevy to customize.

Ive heard of several songs that are supposed to be the first rock and roll record. Caldonia by Louis Jordan, Rocket 88 by Bill Haley and the Saddlemen, even Move It On Over by Hank Williams. The Jackie Brenston version is true rock and roll but there were so many songs of that type that came out in that era that a person would have to judge for themselves which was the first.

I don't want to create a controversy but the song "rock and roll" by The Boswell Sisters has little or nothing to do with rock and roll music as we know it ;-)

Supposedly they dropped the amp preparing for this session, hence the proto-fuzz on the guitar.

The biggest loads of utter bollocks are spoken by those who say that this is the first r&r track. It hasn't even got the right beat! Yet you ask those same people - is 'Blueberry Hill' by Fats R&R? And of course they'll say yes. And in fact Blueberry Hill is accepted fully as R&R. And yet the 'Fat Man' in 49 by Fats is EXACTLY the same tune etc - yet those people will say, that Fats track isn't R&R. What a load of crap. Of there are about 5+ tunes PRIOR the 'Fat Man' that have an even better claim to R&R. Duprees Lets Have A Ball from 45. Certainly a couple of Rosetta's tracks have at the very least full blown R&R passages in them.

The first MODERN rock and roll record was "Good Rockin' Tonite", by Elvis Presley, as a followup to his rudimentary "That's Alright". Everything that came before Elvis' "Good Rockin' Tonight" was R and B. R and B is not rock and roll, but is certainly the most important component of it.

My vote for first r&r record goes to Goree Carter's "Rock Awhile" recorded 2 years earlier. The guitar on "Rock Awhile" definitely inspired Chuck Berry's groundbreaking guitar work 5 years later.

Despite it's title Rock and Roll by the Boswell Sisters is definitely not rock and roll and When the Levee Breaks is a blues song so neither of those has any legitimate claim as the first rock and roll record.
