There is a fact about this recording in 1963 that some may not be aware of. She was actually brought up as a sub-teen in Nebraska. The family then moved to Los Angeles so that Robin & her 2 sisters could pursue a career in music. After some minor roles in the music industry, Robin was actually singing The "La La La" parts in Pat Boone's last top 20 "Speedy Gonzales"In the fall of 1963, singer/songwriter Perry Botkin was looking for a session singer for a demo of a song he had written called "Wonderful Summer". At this time, Robin Ward was a married 22 year old woman. She agreed to record it at Goldstar Studios ( look up Phil Spector). During an experiment, Botkin sped up the recording by wrapping splicing tape around the capstan of the recorder. Both Botkin & Ward agreed that the finished recording sounded so appropriate that it was released as a 45RPM record in November of 1963, peaking in December.This "altered" recording resulted in a 22 year old woman sounding like a high school girl. The record sold over 1,000,000 copies in the USA propelling it to gold status.

That must have been great to grow up in Southern Cal in the 60's. We were landlocked in Western PA, but that didn't stop a lot of us from fantasizing the California dream. I saw Jan and Dean perform during their comeback tour in the late 70's. Did you see the made-for-TV movie " Dead Man's Curve"? So tragic about Jan. Yes I did sing on stage with Dean and have a framed picture of the two us together taken after the concert. I also met Al Jardine of the Beach Boys and had drinks with him after a concert in Durham, NC in 1982 (I lived there then). Two really great guys and very friendly.

I was madly in love with a girl in 1963; I was totally undeveloped emotionally so I had no idea how to keep her as "my girl" and indeed she became the girl of a sports jock. Though I lost her after only a few dates, she gave me a wonderful summer.I hope you are well, Janice, wherever you are!

I didn't know this song came out three weeks before President Kennedy was assassinated. I thought it came out during that summer; especially since this is a summer song. That means I was in first grade when this song was first out.
