During the loosely defined period of these recordings, there were only two outstanding artistes. One was' of course, Richard with his wonderful Austrian accent and the other was the delightful Irish John McCormack. Who needs anybody else? Oh unless you listen to the wonderful stuff that Joseph Locke turned out.

Hello, Edmund. Having heard so many artistic singers do this art song, I must say that Tauber's is the first recording I've heard where the phrasing is perfect. The first phrase is written as a legato line form "Plaisir" through"moment" with no break for a breath from beginning to end. Likewise the second phrase. Tauber did it correctly and it was a relief to hear it sung that way. Sorry I didn't come across this sooner and you have my thanks for it.

You make a perfectly reasonable point. A really good translation, made by someone with poetic instincts and a good knowledge of the original language, can be very nice. As you also suggest, some can be, shall we say, less successful:-).......

I really must disagree -- the success of a translation depends on how well it fits the music, and can be wonderful. For example quite a few of Nana Mouskouri's translations seem to be miraculously good. Chances are, most of the time, though..........

Frankly speaking, I was a little bit sceptical about this piece to be sung in German. But having heard the song, I can say that the great Tauber with his phenomenal taste manages to form the gold standard of a performance in any language he chooses.

@karlheinrichlange Oui, ce que vous dites est vrai. Je ne sais pas pourquoi il l'a enregistré en allemand, pour vous dire la vérité. Peut-être qu'il chante pas à l'aise en français, mais la chanson mérite vraiment d'être chanté dans la langue de sa composition. En gros, les versions anglaises sont tout simplement terribles.

Oh yes, absolutely. And the popular history of this 1780 piece is ammunition, I would venture, in defense of Gigli's interpretations of 18th century musical pieces, most notably "In torno al idol mio." Aesthetically speaking, some things just plain work...over centuries.

Thanks for the comment. This is a fairly unusual Tauber, and you are right....it is generally much better in the original French. Tauber's immaculate musicianship and sense of historical style, however, really help salvage it from the seemingly innumerable popular versions. Nothing against Elvis, mind, but there is actually a prior aesthetic history it doesn't hurt to return to, de temps en temps:)

Ordinarily, I would not want to hear this song performed in any other language except French. But Tauber sings it with beautiful tone, musicality, charm, and bittersweet emotion. Thank you, Edmund, for sharing this!
