Renaissance est considéré comme l'un des groupes emblèmes du rock progressif des années 70. Le groupe britannique, à la sonorité unique, fut un des pionniers du courant progressif en combinant les envolées lyriques de la chanteuse Annie Haslam à un folk rock empreint de référence à la musique classique. Ajoutons à cela les prouesses musicales du guitariste Michael Dunford, principal compositeur du groupe, à qui l'on doit les morceaux Northern Lights, Mother Russia et Ashes Are Burning.
