That is really stunning, and moving. The emotion in his voice is genuine and sincere. I do so agree with Adam Terran's comment that there is something painful and poignant about this recording, but at the same time is has a sad reflective beauty that is never bitter.

After hearing this, find 'When You Wish Upon a Star' by Jiminy Cricket & see if you recognize the voice. Cliff Edwards IS Jiminy Cricket! Amazing to think rhis one voice has been charming young & old for nearly 100 years! chuck

I've heard this many times - I even have a copy - and I've heard a lot of songs. Something about this is just painfully poignant, so honest and real. I'm not sure what but, my gawd, it's powerful.

Thanks for your comment. Yes, I checked and Edwards recorded this on 9 June, 1943 according to his bibliography. It's a fine song and he displays a mature, beautiful voice here.

Really fine recording which does show his serious side. I think it comes from late in his career in the 1940s. His 1920s sides do point the way to crooning and some scat as well. By this time he's heard Bing Crosby and others and has deepened his own style.
