Ironic because late-period (1990s/2000s) Michael Stipe is a dead ringer for ... Lex Luthor.

Why the hell is the camera on Stipe the whole time when Mills is singing lead?

It's not a silly song it is a song about being your own hero. Charting your own path and using your skill and superpowers to overcome obstacles in life.

Nice cover, but I think I like the original version by The Clique better

Absolutely--I first heard REM's "Superman" at my first frat party when I was a freshman in college in 1988! You can hear the '60s sound in it, though--Gary Zekley originally wrote it for the Clique in '69. He had done some writing with Jan & Dean before that.

And don't forget The Clique's other unknown track "I'll Hold Out My Hand"

band and i are doing this song. we love to play it after the crowd is a bit drunk and we are really tired. it always ends with us laughing too much, so much fun

I much prefer the original by The Clique from 1969 which is here on YouTube. It certainly works well for R.E.M. and even better for the great sunshine music band from Texas. Also, if you like that pop factor in this song, check the Clique version of "Sugar on Sunday". You will be haunted by its chorus.

C'mon, man, this is a great pop song; nice hook, harmonies, groovin rhythm.

Yeah, MS's voice is one-of-a-kind, deep, strong and haunting, but MM's voice makes me happy, it's got a sweet quality. Wished he'd sung lead maybe once per album.

This music was used for the ending theme to a CSI:NY episode. And in this context it is very moving & emotional. It's Det. Flack & other NYPD officer in pursuit & capturing A bad guy, then shifts to the lab, where the CSI crew is analyzing data & collecting evidence. And I thought that was really cool, the Episode is called "Superheroes" , It affected me so much that I found tears rolling down my face!! Thank you REM & Thank you CSI:NY for creating for me a priceless memory.

REM has always been intellectual nerd rock. Them nor any of their songs were ever "cool", but always entertaining in it's own way. A guilty pleasure.

I saw this tour, Felt Forum NYC, I stood next to Zekely's daughter. Someone got hurt up front in the audience, and Stipe berated the crowd and then the band called the show. Still a great 45 minute set.

everytime I look up a sweet early live REM song it's in my hometown two years before I was born.
