An old Irish Air, " The Dawning Of The Day "; it has become well known as the melody to which Patrick Cavahanagh's " On Raglan Road " is sung !!!

On a quiet street where old ghosts meet,I see her walking now away from me,So hurriedly. My reason must allow,For I have wooed, not as I shouldA creature made of clay. When the angel woos the clay, he'll loseHis wings at the dawn of the day.

Thank you Ronnie, John, Barney, Paddy, Eamon, and of course Luke and Ciaron for giving me so much pleasure over 40 years. So sad that we will hear them no more. John's whistle playing in this is so haunting.

Luke Kelly sang the definitive version of this song although I like other versions as well. The man died too young like so many with true talent. Nice tribute of a poignant poem.

Isn't he great. He brings those loose, low notes in so well. Does Ronnie ever use open tuning on the guitar ?

I first heard this song while watching the movie, In Bruges, and I instantly fell in love. My family immigrated to the U.S. from Ireland in the late 1700's, and these days, I can't help but wish we could emigrate back. So glad I found a version of Ronnie Drew singing it.
