His interpretation is NOT a challenge to Luke Kelly's version. Luke did it best, we all know that, but don't hate this guy for doing what music is all about. Including Irish Trad. Reinterpret. Irish music has always done that.

lukes version of this has got to be the definitive one. his diction and pure feeling and passion could bring a tear to a glass eye. r.i.p. legend

Listening to multiple versions of this ballad gives you the option to make choices as to the version / singer of your preference, the song itself conjures up your own mental pictures which are/may be different to each other peoples. Therefore, there is no 'best' version or 'best' singer of this awesome ballad, only the version of your own preference.

So many morons on the comment section. Didn't know Luke had so many idiotic fans who don't understand the meaning of music.

He brought the song to a different generation. He didn't make the song a rock or hip-hop, it was his version of a standard.

True, Luke Kelly's version better. But why so much hate? He did his own way like always. İrish people should listen his songs like; İrish boy, Father and Son, The Long Road, Piper To The End, A Night in Summer Long Ago, Border Reiver, Before Gas and TV, Haul Away....So on. He serves İrish traditional music for decades. The man was a rock star yet he shines like a northern star when doing his roots music. Of course you've got a right to dislike; but why so much hate?

I agree that Lukes version of the song is definitive ,but I think that Mark deserves great credit for his sensitive treatment of the words of what is a poem of great beauty.I think Patrick Kavanagh would approve.

On Raglan Road on an Autumn Day,I saw her first and knewThat her dark hair would weave a snareThat I may one day rue.I saw the danger, yet I walkedAlong the enchanted wayAnd I said let grief be a falling leafAt the dawning of the day.

I love Mark Knopfler, and I loved the Dubliners. Sad to say Mark's version of this song isn't a patch on Ronnie Drew's or the legend that was Luke Kelly.
