Ronan named his ship after Caroline Kennedy - then a cute kid whose picture he saw in a newspaper. The Fortunes' record was just a happy coincidence! For more naustalgia, check out http://corneliusatloppers.wordpress.com/

I wish you would correct the nonsense that you posted. Ronan O'Rahilly did not name anything. The name 'Caroline' was in use as early as 1961 by Jocelyn Stevens' at his 'Queen' magazine. The myth, the hoax, that 'Caroline' was connected to Caroline Kennedy was born one year in March 1965, after Radio Caroline came on the air in March 1964, in order to fool Robert Kennedy to assist with a plan to stop US immigration from allowing unknown British pop groups from entering the USA where they needed work permits. Ronan O'Rahlly was the foil, the 'front man', the "decoy duck", as one MP called him, for a big British electrical manufacturer that put up the money to start Radio Caroline by buying a ship in late December 1963. The Irish company Planet Productions was formed to sell airtime and it was registered in Ireland on February 27, 1964. It is time to end this silly name myth and kill off a hoax which has fooled a lot of people. Ironically, when Radio Caroline first came on the air the quality British business and political magazines of the day stated the real explanation, and their reports are still available to read in 2018.

The pop pirates were band from the air waves many years ago. The UK government at the time introduced BBC radio one as a substitute. This seems to me, a classic case of a governmental lack of understanding of what the people wanted . Seems to ring a bell in our modern day as well. Ding Ding Caroline the history of music will never die.

Greetings to the Admiral whom I had the pleasure of meeting at the 40th in 2004, along with other old friends. Can't go along with BBC Essex highlighting 50 years this year. After all they did to silence the pirates in the 60's and again in the 80's this is nothing more than bloody hypocrisy, and I want no part of it. Nothing against you Robbie or Johnnie and Roger, but you have to agree radio has been shit since they silenced us.

The Fortunes did the best for both ships, North & South. Did you ever hear the Spanish version by the Jordans, it was well out of tune.
