The reason that it sounds different from what is normally thought of as a mandolin could be that it is an old italian bowlback mandolin, which sound closer to Balalaikas than their modern counterparts.10 years ago

Actually, Prokofiev specifically included mandolins in the instrumentation to Romeo and Juliet to make it sound more "Italianate." Balalaikas are not usually included in the instrumentation.11 years ago
