Having taken six straight years of Spanish it still bothers me that he doesn't pronounce "conquistador" properly.

This is the first time I've ever heard the original version, I'm used to the 72 remix. There is, however, a beauty in the original which is overlooked in the remix. If you're wondering how only now I've heard this for the first time, it's simple....the album & I both debuted in 1967.

Conquistador your stallion standsin need of companyand like some angel's haloed browyou reek of purityI see your armour-plated breasthas long since lost its sheenand in your death mask facethere are no signs which can be seenAnd though I hoped for somethingto findI could see no maze to unwindConquistador a vulture sitsupon your silver shieldand in your rusty scabbard nowthe sand has taken seedand though your jewel-encrusted bladehas not been plundered stillthe sea has washed across your faceand taken of its fillAnd though I hoped for somethingto findI could see no maze to unwindConquistador there is no timeI must pay my respectand though I came to jeer at youI leave now with regretand as the gloom begins to fallI see there is no, only alland though you came with sword held highyou did not conquer, only dieAnd though I hoped for somethingto findI could see no maze to unwind

I've had this album a few different times since 1967. Was just listening to the CD in my car today as I was running around doing errands. I've always always loved this album.

Good song but I cringe at the Anglicized pronunciation.

The original and far superior version! listen to Matthew Fisher's fabulous, understated organ work throughout, not just at the end!

I like the bit slower tempo in this original version. Better without the horns - more mellow and basic. The weaving organ is superb. Prefer this arrangement.

I love both versions, and the lyrics are brilliant. I mean, who uses the word "aureole" in a song? Nobody today, that's for sure. But I write and I'm gonna use it haha!  Anyway, the word aureole means a bright light around a holy figure. A halo is an aureole, and if you look at medieval religious paintings you will often see that the entire figure of the holy one is surrounded by a brighter light than the rest of the painting. Even some modern paintings, actually. Many lyric interpretations say that the phrase is "I see there is no, only all...", which makes no sense anyway. It is aureole. "I can see there is no aureole." In case you did not know.
