One has the same feelings for ones children as one hopes God if he exists, would have for man - for man is a child in the world, As for WorkshipDarkWave's critique - I think 'Billy' and much of 'Crimson and Red' is as fascinating as say 'Protest Songs' and other stuff from the 80's.

Paddy May have become a more spiritually enlightened human being through his isolation and introspection but God and His Angels certainly haven't done anything for his songwriting since his twenties. Not that I don't absolutely LOVE Paddy McAloon to death for the great music he has brought us..much of it the story of my life...but It seems his best musical works were reserved for the times when he sang in angst and sorrowful lament of the mistakes made in his youth (specifically Two Wheels Good/Steve McQueen/Protest Songs).

It's been a few years since I posted this song and I've been fascinated by the comments. Personally I don't believe it as a religious song at all, or indeed that Paddy is a born again. The clue is in the opening line.." I've no time for religion". I think the song is just about love, pure and simple. I'd like to think Paddy wrote it for his family/kids, which is why I included a photo of Paddy and one of his daughters....but hey, that's just my view. There, I've said my bit.

My God (pun certainly intended!) If you have been listening to Prefab Sprout for more than a day you would know that Paddy McAloon has used effaced narrative and metaphor to elicit spiritual concepts in reference to God on many of his albums prior to 2009. Granted, his current work surely doesn't measure up to Steve McQueen or Jordan the Comeback but his spiritual affinity or belief in God or Jesus has NOTHING to do with any of that.

I am not religious myself but although he has obviously high literary ambitions in his style of writing with various forms of play with the narrator,it is pretty obvious that he seems to have had doubts about his catholic faith..Hard to believe though the line "I have no time for religion "is related to him?I was re reading the letters of Voltaire about Quakers and the history relations of the Stuarts with Penn. That inspiring is the song Ride for me actually.I doubt he's become a quaker though.

Well I do not know much.I used to collect the singles for the most excellent bsides and then lost interest.Never was a big fan of techno and end of 80s90s pop exemplified in his laterLP.Post punk, dub, jazz even classic captured my imagination rather than charts. The thing is I studied english literature, the quality of the lyrics, beauty of the singing, again at odds with the commercial sound puzzles me.I am more mature and like that discrepancy better.Very intelligent irony and inspiring artist.
