It was engineered by Steve Albini in Q Division in Boston. 4AD paid for 10 days in the studio, but that's the extent of Ivo's involvement. The 'producers' are Steve Albini, assisted by Jon Lupfer. I've never heard Albini talk about anything 'gimmicky', apart from his inclusion of the studio banter.

the bad sq is caused by youtube and it still sounds better than most rock recordings after 2000 thanks to the loudness war. even 70s recordings on properly mastered cds sound better than the compressed crap they release nowadays. thing is, they wouldnt have to do it, music being played on the radio is compressed anyways.
