High Into The Sky is a track featured on the first Pilot album 'From The Album of the Same Name' which was released in 1974. The video is from an episode of the 70's programme 'Supersonic'. It was presented by Mike Mansfield. (Cue the music!) I loved these programmes as they were live and the artists never knew what was going to happen! I think this is a wonderful performance by the lads.

Such a great clip. Someone had said this was live. I think most of it is but you can clearly hear a rhythm guitar playing the C# chord during Ian's solo, so at least some of it is pre-recorded. No matter though....because it still is unbelievably awesome....better than the studio version!!!! Thanks so much for posting!

I did mention that i loved Pilot to Todd once and he smiled. A smile. Not a smirk, which is what you often get from TR. It's entirely possible he only knows "Magic". I don't think Todd sits around listening to a lot of other artists. But I know DP likes TR as he recently mentioned that on his facebook page in regards to the Live at Daryl's House show TR was on. I was instantly thrilled. I find often artists I highly admire also admire each other (and this is mingogo69, by the way!) I love this clip!!!

@knightrats Well, after all they turned out to be Britain's highly regarded main session musicians at the end of the '70s and onto the following decade... not only playing along Kate Bush, but mainly being the core of the Alan Parsons Project (a gang of Scots there!) and then Davie fiund his spotlight again with Sir Elton. :-)

Davie... but here it is all Billy's and mostly Stu's work... they push the song onto being heavier than the original version. My favourite ever song by Pilot. Billy R.I.P., wherever ye braveheart lie. :-)

@mingogo69 For sure Todd wasn't behind the board on anything Pilot, but the admiration is mutual, I am almost certain. David Paton in fact mentioned to me once about going to a recent Rundgren show and how much he loves his work... Can't imagine Todd doesn't love the PILOT catalog in depth as well. If you are in a position to ask TR about the work of David and Ian in particular I'd love to hear what he has to say. Underrated power pop genius is the truth, and I'd have to think TR champions that.

A RARE GEM from the legit working band PILOT in their early UK days. Ian shows he's already a virtuoso. An amazing live solo, and David excels wearing every hat as band leader. Tosh is stunning on skins if you listen carefully, as is the always underrated Billy Lyall on keys. Compare this jam to the slick studio version w/ full Rundgren production and "doobie doobie doobie doobie doobie doobie" backing vocal. Mike McDonald himself would be proud.

Yes they certainly did deserve more success and one of the best bands. Thank you for your comment. Michelle

Where do you find these gems, Michelle? As Alec said, a nice alt. version with subtle differences, with live energy yet the perfection of the studio. And awesome sound quality! Ian's solo is explosive, he really deserves the *high* floor.. and think that in the beginning he was not considered a main Pilot member! Giorgio

Just great, they deserved so much more success, kinda got caught up with the later end of glamrock (falsely) and just as trends were shifting they got pushed aside. Pilot were a fantastic band.
