Peter, Paul, & Mary - Long Chain on

It made me mad that my favorite song from Peter, Paul & Mary didn't appear when I searched it on Youtube, so I decided to post it for all to enjoy. It's very moving, and I hope you enjoy it.

I DO NOT OWN ANY COPYRIGHTS TO THIS VIDEO

*On a side note, don't be disappointed with some of the songs kids listen to these days. Some of us still appreciate quality music :) and this is coming from a 17 year old girl raised up in Southern California. :) Anyways enjoy

LYRICS

One night as I lay on my pillow,

moonlight as bright as the dawn

I saw a man come a walking,

he had a long chain on.

I heard his chains a clankin',

they made a mournful sound,

Welded around his body,

draggin' along the ground.

Chorus:

He had a long chain on

He had a long chain on

He had a long chain on

He stood beside my window,

he looked at me and he said

"I am so tired and hungry.

Give me a bite of your bread"

He didn't look like a robber,

he didn't look like a thief

His voice was as soft as the moonlight,

a face full of sorrow and grief.

(Chorus)

I went into my kitchen,

fetched him a bowl full of meat

A drink and a pan of cold biscuits,

that's what I gave him to eat

Though he was tired and hungry

a bright light came over his face

He bowed his head in the moonlight,

he said a beautiful grace.

(Chorus)

I got my hammer and chisel,

offered to set him free

He looked at me and said softly,

"I guess we had best let it be."

When he had finished his supper,

he thanked me again and again.

Though it's been years since I've seen him,

still hear him draggin' his chain.

Thank you for sharing this. I've wanted to hear it for a long time. Does anyone remember which album this was on?

One of my favourites as well. Thank you for sharing it.

I think this was written by Jimmy Driftwood who may also have written The Battle of New Orleans and The Tennessee Stud. There are several videos on YouTube with him. Go, P,P&M!

Who is this song about? Was it a real person or a ghost?

Fortunately I have this track, along with the superb In the Wind album on a very treasured piece of Vinyl, in those days pressed in the UK by Pye Records in Mitcham.

Good to see a couple of young people with some sense. I know there are a few since I teach advanced math to juniors and seniors.

Thank you so much! This was the song I liked best from the first album I heard by PP&M when I was nine years old; this and "Stewball".

The 1st time I heard this, I was in tears. That was Sept. of '63, when I was 17 y/o. When I talked 3 of my classmates into singing this for our all-school talent show, it took us almost 4 months to get it right--2 guys, 2 girls, I took Peter's vocal. The guitar's are beyond difficult to do--we came close, but never did it the way they did. Listening again, I'm in tears, remembering the ovation we received when we were done. A Masterpiece, from PPM's finest album, ever. Wolfsky9

Another masterpiece from PPM, & on not heard nearly enough. I sang this with 3 others at our high school talent show. & we won. I took Peter Yarrows vocal, & to this day, it's the best vocalizing I have ever, EVER, done. Thank-you PPM, your music is 4-ever. Wolfsky9, 66 y/o, Class of '64.

Thank you!!! ...for having such good taste and for taking the time to share it. This particular recording is my favorite and is hard to find. My life was incomplete without it.

Thanks, it does encourage me to think that there is an audience for this music today. This song meant a lot when it was first sung and an entire race of Americans who had lived in this country for centuries had a long chain on. It is still strangely powerful.
