Pete played all the drum and bass parts on his demos. Keith loved that Pete drummed the way he did, minus all the Moonisms. On the Quad soundtrack version, Kenney Jones plays the drums and quite nicely at that.

You're absolutely right. Pete did most of the drumming himself on these demos, but he did utilize a rhythm machine in addition to the drums. Keith was THE greatest drummer I've ever seen, in any musical genre! Unmatchable!

I don't know about "drum machine." Pete became a pretty good drummer and drummed on all of his own demos. He learned a lot about playing drums from Keith.

The Who did a full recording of this song with Roger on vocals. They released it on the Quadrophenia movie soundtrack.

As per Pete, you are correct. The rest of The Who came into the studio and essentially laid their tracks down on top of the raw demos. Pete's a friggin' genius.

Nope, it's all Pete on these demos.

Nope. That's Moonie and John. Pete, God bless his soul, could never play drums like that. Nor bass like that. These are more primitive versions, but they are the Who, sans Roger not just Pete.

A 'new' townshend song! I'm elated! It sounds a lot like the type of songs he wrote for Who Sell Out, I like it a lot! Thank you

From everything I've read on these demos, Pete is the only musician on all the tracks. There's drum machine and other synth work added, but that's it. No Keith. No John. This is all Pete's baby. [The videos I sent XxOceanViewsxX were two very recent live performances of Pete on the Later With Jools Holland show, doing acoustic versions of "Drowned" and "I'm One." Highly recommended!!! Just search for "townshend jools drowned" or "townshend jools i'm one" Pete's better than ever!]

You are very welcome! Yes, this tune definitely has a different "feel" to it than how the final Quadrophenia album turned out. Thank goodness that Pete saved all these rejected treasures, and shared them with us. :)

Pete continued, "In fact, I kept the song in right the way up to the point where the band went into the studio and then suddenly Quad took on a different turn. As soon as the band started laying down backing tracks at Battersea, it didn't feel like the Quad that I thought was going to come out. It was much heavier, much more brutal, and so I dropped it." Pete's "dropped" tunes are still better than 99% of other artists' official releases! :)

Pete said, "Joker James was the first song I wrote for Quad. In other words, I took that song as the basis for the image of the kid -- the way he saw himself -- as this kind of reasonable joker whose life doesn't come off but, in fact, on the outside he didn't appear that way at all and he was very far from being a joker."
