I once helped Pete build the Woody Guthrie, we built her next to the railroad tracks in Yonkers NY right next to the Hudson. Pete was a great man. He will be missed. I'll never forget the time when we sailed the Woody near some old rotten piers in Redhook, a rundown drug infested neighborhood in Brooklyn. Pete thought it would be a great place to bring the public on board for harbor sails. I tried to talk him out of it, I was living in Brooklyn at the time. Pete ignored my warning. We made landfall and some undercover FBI jumped out of the bushes pissed off that we'd run right into the middle of their sting operation. The head honcho yelled angrily "CONGRATULATIONS, YOU HAVE JUST DISCOVERED AMERICA, NOW SHOW SOME ID!!! Pete didn't have any so he said "Well, I don't have any ID, but I'm Pete Seeger, the musician! The cop snarled at us and "Said Yeah, SURE BUDDY, and I'm SANTA CLAUS, so show some ID right now!!" Somehow we managed to talk him out of arresting us, but damn he was pissed! Pete Seeger's legacy will outlive him for a very long time, he made a huge positive mark on anyone he came into contact with, even if they were poles apart from him politically. He was very hard to dislike because he was so honest. He was a very rare person.

He was not a 'commie' or anti American. As a young one, he explored many different political beliefs, different life styles, and alternative ways. This is the mark of an intelligent, inquisitive man. I checked them all out when I was young, too. Years ago, we were at a card party. It was a presidential election year. There were 20 of us there. We discussed the upcoming election and discovered that there were supporters for 5 different candidates. And we all respected the views of each other. Don't be hateful.

I had the GREAT privilege and honor to have met Pete as a teenager in Beacon NY. He was the nicest man I have ever met, he was humble and was willing to teach a 15 yr old boy that he didn't even know how to finger pick a guitar. I was sitting there on the porch practicing the first time I saw him and had no idea who this great man was. Those who say he was anti-American are blind, he stood for EXACTLY what it means to be American. To speak out with out having to fear for your life when you see a wrong, to follow what you believe in.

Pete Seeger was anti-american, and a fan of communist slavery.
