Bruce Arnold and his band Orpheus perform their hit single "Can't Find The Time" in late 1969. This lip-synced performance was shot for a television show, which aired in the New England area only weeks after MGM re-released the original single. This was nearly two years after it's first issue.

This second release actually charted higher (Billboard #80). Unfortunately MGM still managed to fumble the promotion and took months to distribute the re-issued single to radio stations. Records show that although "Can't Find The Time" was in heavy rotation on the East Coast and spent weeks on the Top 10 playlists of many radio stations across the country, stations in the Midwest and West Coast did not receive the single in time for their airplays to be added to Billboard's national chart tabulations.

As with the original release in January of '68, the inept promotion department at MGM again mistimed the single's impact and any momentum Orpheus could have gathered from the re-issued single was lost. Several months later, Bruce Arnold disbanded the original Orpheus and hired a new group of musicians which included the legendary drummer Bernard "Pretty" Purdie. Purdie was no stranger to Arnold's music as he was, in fact, the uncredited player on Orpheus' debut album as well as all of their subsequent singles.

Written and arranged by Arnold, "Can't Find The Time" (a.k.a. "Can't Find The Time To Tell You") is now widely recognized as a timeless classic. It has been covered by dozens of artists including Hootie & The Blowfish. Hootie's version appears in the Farelly Brothers film, "Me, Myself & Irene" starring Jim Carrey and Renée Zellweger.

Bruce Arnold lives in Marin County, California and has recorded a new album with plans for a future Orpheus project featuring original members Howard Hersh, Elliot Sherman and Bernard Purdie.

The new album available now features the late great Brad Delp (Boston) as well as David Freiberg (Quicksilver Messenger Service, Jefferson Starship), Jerry Harrison (The Talking Heads), Darby Slick (The Great Society, Jefferson Airplane) and the Tiger Okoshi horn section.

Digital downloads of Orpheus music are being offered by Iris Music Group (IMG). The mixes on these releases do not match the original LP's and in many cases, a digital echo effect has been added. Furthermore, IMG has deliberately changed the artist's names in an attempt to circumvent royalties. Bruce Arnold does not endorse or recommend these dishonest and sonically substandard releases.

Loved this 45 years ago and still do. Wonderful to see you have a Facebook page and are still active. One of my favorites on WOR-FM in New York back in the day (I still have the Solid Gold album that it's on). Thanks for the memories.

Based upon the fact that Orpheus specifically linked themselves to Greek mythology on the cover of their first album by adorning band members with fig leaf halos, here's my interpretation of the song: 1) Singing to Eurydice, Orpheus does not have the time to do anything as he walks in front of her as they ascend from the underworld, because he is concentrating on not looking at her; 2) This was agreed upon with Hades and Persephone as the ransom by which he revived Eurydice after he won over the underworld with his sad and beautiful songs; 3) However, later in the song Orpheus looks upon her pretty face as he first reaches the upper world but because she is behind him and still in the underworld, Eurydice vanishes forever, her nightgown of regal lace flowing to the ground in the mist of her memory. And the rest, as they say is ...er ...mythology.

Still a great song and the only hit for Orpheus. The ultimate slow dance song.

I grew up with Orpheus in the Boston area. A couple friends and I would get together and play guitars and sing their songs ... wishing we could sound just half as good as them. Saw them at Archbishop Williams HS in Braintree, MA around 1970. Saw them again this summer at the Marin County Fair (San Rafael, CA). Much has changed with the band over the last 40+ years (duh) but they still sound good. It was very cool to see Bruce Arnold's son as his co-front man. Hope I can see (I'd settle for hear) them again in another 40 years.

I just love this song. Heard it in a movie called Me, Myself, And Irene. Not for the first time. I grew up in the 60's, and love everything about that time. Karen

I saw them perform in a small bar in NJ around 68 or 69. They sang before the Brooklyn Bridge. My ears hurt after that because the bar was so small and the BB had so many instruments that it was super loud, but great. Never heard this song before that night but it was my favorite all these years

I have never heard this song before Me, Myself, and Irene. I had no idea Hootie's was a cover. I found out whilst trying to download it from iTunes and you have to pay 10$ for the whole movie's soundtrack, can't get the one song - forget that!!! I checked every cover to see which one I liked the best and incidentally, this, the original song is the best one! I can't get enough of this song. :)

I just viewed a recent Donovan concert on You Tube, with Season of the witch being my favorite tune of that era. Then I thought of a total gem from 1969 "I Can't Find the time to tell you" by Orpheus. This song was one of my favorite love songs of 1969 & still is today. Keeping in mind that my favorite 3 bands of the time were the Allman Bros., Frank Zappa & the Mothers, & the Band, I always have loved beautiful ballads in general, and this one in particular. WNEW-FM in NY< used to play the extended version, and I thank you for sharing this song in particular, because it reminds me of a special girl from that time that I didn't find the time to tell. I found the love of my life in 1972, & we've been a couple for42 years, & married for almost 37 yrs., through thick & thin, And I definitely will find the time to tell her more that I love her. This song taught me once that by sharing the fact that you do love a person, will keep your love young everyday. Thanks for sharing this rare gem of a song. Peace.
