The music on From Genesis To Revelation sounds very little like what Genesis would produce even two years later. When this album was recorded in 1968, the ages of the band members ranged from 16 to 18, and none of them considered themselves proficient musicians as they had hardly any studio experience.

Don't get me wrong

I think I'm in love

But the feeling in the word is more

Than your crystal eyes will ever see in me

Don't get me wrong

Open your eyes

Although I cannot show my heart

I'll watch and hope while you are near to me

One day I'll capture you

And call you to my side

One day I'll take you from

The boredom of our lives

One day we'll fly away

To the kingdom of my dreams

One day I'll find myself

And wrap it in my love for you

Birds of the sky, may I borrow your wings?

Very soon I'll ask my love

To travel with me to the world outside

Cherry trees, may I borrow your bloom?

Very soon I'll ask my love

To come inside the nest I'll build alone

One day I'll capture you

And call you to my side

One day I'll take you from

The boredom of our lives

One day we'll fly away

To the kingdom of my dreams

One day I'll find myself

And wrap it in my love for you

Animal friends

Help me decide

When should I ask my love to leave?

I'll beg of you that she'll say yes to me

Breathe in deep

Now is the time

She looks at me and gently smiles

As if she knew I'd ask her all the time

One day I'll capture you

And call you to my side

One day I'll take you from

The boredom of our lives

One day we'll fly away

To the kingdom of my dreams

One day I'll find myself

And wrap it in my love for you

I'll just add my voice to the others who compliment you on the pictures. Very beautiful old pics, many of them I had not seen before, and lovely arrangement. Thanks! =)

I'll chime in if I may. String arrangements were a popular tool of producers back then and the vibe was "if so and so does I can do it too" carries on here. Jonathan King had a hit already with Everyone's gone to the Moon -Not a bad track actually . SO I am inclined to believe that he was trying to get a hit out of these guys as well

It was written and recorded during the same time period as when the Moodys were composing their greats. Many songs in those years had this same 'sound' . Quite a classic time and glad to have witnessed it.

And I feel something similar. It's so strange, provided that Genesis, Beatles, Yes and many others come from a culture so different than mine. At the time I started listening to them I didn't know a word of English, later on there was the infamous conflict between UK and Argentina for the Malvinas/Falkland islands. Even so, this kind of music was kept deeply in my heart. Amazing.

I keep wondering if the original master tapes are still available? If so, wouldn't it be possible for the band members to get together and do away with the string parts and make it how they first envisaged it?

1:56 Amazing how it takes a lifetime to express in action what one image captures in a moment.

Peter didn't turn his back on anything, not musically anyway. You can sort of tell what Genesis bits were Peter's, as most of them sound like something he would have done solo. From Nursery Cryme onward, Peter and Phil, and to a lesser extent Mike, were the pop connoisseurs within the band.

Wow, that book you mention is a must read, so then. I used to love this album, but I really think this is not what Mr. Gabriel wanted to mean with his music and art.

I've gotten used to the strings but my first introduction to them was reading a book on the band which put a pretty negative spin on it. Not to say I don't have my own opinion on it but according to the author it was an attempt by Jonathon King to match the Bee Gees sound of the day which is definitely not the direction Genesis headed on their subsequent albums. The book, "The Evolution of a rock band: Genesis" by Armando Gallo is a really good read that doesn't sensationalize the band.

Ok. So, in your personal point of view, do you consider those string arrangements as awful and cheesy?

Wikpedia: "The resulting album, From Genesis to Revelation, was released on Decca Records in March 1969. During the sessions, Stewart was replaced by John Silver on drums. The band recorded a series of songs influenced by the light pop style of the Bee Gees, one of (Jonathon) King's favourite bands at the time. King assembled the tracks as a concept album, and added string arrangements during the production".King discovered them and added the cheesy strings -the band never let that happen again.

So true, Arkan, and yes Prog-ish could be applied to some of his solo work but maybe not pure prog and definitely never mistaken as a Genesis song. It is also interesting that though Pete wrote much of the lyric for Genesis his solo work also does not seem similiar lyrically. Again, I am a huge fan of both Genesis and Gabriel solo but I guess my point is that technically Peter is the one who turned his back on Genesis the most. Tony and Mike and Steve and yes Phil stayed on course for a bit.

Peter's visuals and costumes were what got Genesis noticed, because before that, a Genesis live show consisted of 4 guys sitting down in a semi-circle around a singer standing in front of a bass drum. It's been said that they were a horribly boring live act in those early days (even though Peter did break his leg stage-diving on one occasion very early on). And I think some of Peter's solo work was definitely prog-ish.
