There's a danger zone, not a stranger zoneThan the little plot I walk on that I call my homeFull of eerie sights, weird and skeery sightsEvery vicious animal that creeps and crawls and bites!! On the Amazon, the prophylactics prowl On the Amazon, the hypodermics howl On the Amazon, you'll hear a scarab scowl and sting zodiacs on the wing All the stalactites and vicious vertebraeHunt the stalagmites while laryngitis slayAll that parasites that come from Paraguay in the springHmm, hmm hmmm Snarling equinox among the rocks will seize youAnd the Fahrenheit comes out at night to freeze you Wild duodenum are lurking in the treesAnd the jungle swarms with green apostrophesOh, the Amazon is calling me On the Amazon, the pax vobiscum biteOn the Amazon, the epiglottis fightOn the Amazon, the hemispheres at night all slink where the agnostics drink All the hippodromes that lie concealed in mudHunt the metronomes that live in swamp and floodThen the kodachromes run out and drink their blood, poor ginks While velocipedes among the weeds will scare youAnd the menopause with hungry jaws ensnares you Frenzied adenoids infest the hills and slopesEveryone avoids the deadly stethoscopes Oh, the Amazon is callingYes, the Amazon is callingOh, the Amazon is calling me-ee!!

This song comes from a very successful musical of 1927/1928 with music by Vivian Ellis. It ran for 528 performances in London and was also adapted in Germany. Here the part of Bobby Howes was played by Harald Paulsen. The songs were also translated into German and the musical got a new name.

On the Amazon. . . a great silly song played by Don McLean (he didn't just do American Pie, mind you)#yoderjams #donmclean

To all those saying that DM didn't write this: he didn't, but he did modify and modernise it. Some of his additions (e.g. "the pax vobiscum bite" are funnier than the originals.

I love the way he's trying not to laugh in the middle there. It makes the song even better. :)

It was a 1924 musical with music by Vivian Ellis and Richard Myers. The Bobby Howes 1929 version is also on Youtube.

I heard this song as a kid, and have waited for YEARS to hear it again aside from the messed up live version. Thank you SO MUCH for posting this! I absolutely, positively LOVE it. Being a word lover this song has so much appeal, and the absurdity and humor just hit me SO perfectly. I love his serious stuff, but this makes me laugh out loud every time I hear it...I even have a little act that goes with it that I remember from way back when. : )

Sounds like he had fun singing this, even laughing at one point. I love the spontaneity. It reminds me of his Everybody Loves Me, Baby where he also sounds like he's having a blast.

I'm surprised that he didn't write this song but still he clearly had fun singing it. It reminds me of his Everybody Loves Me, Baby where he sounds like he's having a blast. Both performances are such a joy to listen to.

@heycolslaw That song is so much older than him so he didn't write it, but it's a good thing he sang it and clearly enjoyed doing so, even laughing at one point. It's such a refreshing and spontaneous performance which reminds me of his Everybody Loves Me, Baby in which he sounded like he was having a blast.

Colorful arrangement of unusual words in phrases & rhymes! he had a ball writing this one! I'll bet he had a hard time singing this one the first time through without rolling on the floor, laughing!
