touching and heartbreaking. Touches so many chords of human experience, bitter sweet, yet somehow, despite experience, would we really want to not have such memories? I feel that being able to relate to this song is somethng that has been painfully earned, and all things considered I wouldn't want not to have the scars I have. But perhaps I'm only making the best of what I have! Anyway, lovely song!

Iv'e been a great admirer of Don McLean's music for more years than I care to remember and still have my Vinyl copy of this album, along with practically everything else he's released. I often feel when listening to this song that When Don wrote the last lines "and forms a gold stairway that all of us climb" he should have added "whether we want to or not" many of us would prefer not to climb that stairway again. Especially after a bad breakup because the aftermath is just too painful and crushing and although we swear never to fall so hard for someone again we are always dumb enough to. Perhaps because our common sense and survival instincts has been overcome when struck by the same chain lightning. Just a thought!

When you 'abstain' as it were from GOOD music for a while, by succoming to junk, music like this soon puts you back on the right road. I LOVE playing this through my 4ft high column speakers at 100dbs. I get lots of requests from neighbors down the street, and some of them aren't requesting music---

Thanks for this. I was introduced to it by my girlfriend. Was familiar with bits and pieces of Don McLean, but this song really cemented in my mind he's a great songwriter. It's pretty much my favourite song ever.

The radio plays the music that is marketable to the linear and can keep the soul of humanity dumbed down to a zombie consumer...Thank you for not being a sell out Mr.McLean (what Bob Dylan wishes he could be).

. The radio does suck, I can only listen to AM580. no adds and all passionate classic music, how awesome does that sound!. better than any satellite or HD radio. We need to bring back when people were alive and fight off the corporate death of our soles before it is too late. Its too easy to live with love and happiness. No more competition to make few rich. If we all find our way no corporation can grow. they are winning the war, but its not over. The beautiful people will rise again .

Many thanks for posting this most beautifully profound and lyrical song, which I've probably only ever heard once before but never forgotten it! It was on TV with Don McLean in concert and I recorded it on a very substandard cassette recorder. This is the first time since then that I've heard it, it was as though it had been struck by lightning! Good to see so many others here who love this song too.
